UV-resistant clear coat (optional for outdoor/display props)

🏗️ Step-by-Step Process
1. Inspect the Print
Check for common 3D printing artifacts:

Layer Lines: Horizontal striations from layer stacking

Stringing: Fine threads between points

Zits and Blobs: Small bumps from retractions

Seam Lines: Visible start/end of each layer

👉 Tip: PLA, ABS, PETG, and resin prints all behave differently—adjust sanding and filler choices accordingly.

2. Initial Clean-Up
Remove any supports carefully using flush cutters or a craft knife.

Use a deburring tool or sandpaper (80–120 grit) to smooth out rough support contact points.

Clean the model with IPA to remove oils, dust, and print residue.

3. Sanding and Surface Prep
Sand with 120 grit to knock down major imperfections.

Use filler putty (e.g., Bondo) to fill gaps, zits, and seams.

Let it dry, then sand smooth with 220 grit.

🔁 Repeat sanding and puttying as needed until the surface is smooth and even.

4. Apply Filler Primer
Spray 1–2 coats of filler primer evenly across the surface.

Let dry completely (follow the product’s cure time).

Sand with 400 grit for smoothness.

Spot fill any missed areas with putty and re-prime if needed.

👉 Filler primer helps smooth out layer lines and reveals imperfections.

5. Final Sanding
Use 600–800 grit for a final smooth surface.

For glossy finishes, optional wet sanding (800–1000+ grit) after priming gives a mirror-smooth base.

6. Painting
Apply a base coat with spray paint or airbrush.

Acrylics: Easy to use, fast-drying, less toxic

Enamels: Durable but slower drying

Lacquers: Best for pro finishes, requires care

Apply in thin, even coats to avoid drips.

Allow each layer to dry before applying the next.

Use masking tape for clean edges when applying multiple colors.

7. Weathering & Detailing (Optional)
Dry brushing, washes, and sponging add realism:

Wash: Thin paint applied then wiped to settle into crevices

Dry Brush: Light strokes with nearly dry paint to catch edges

Chipping: Use a sponge or brush for faux damage

8. Lacquering/Clear Coat
Choose finish: Matte, Satin, or Gloss

Apply 2–3 light coats of clear lacquer or polyurethane.

Let dry fully between coats (check product specs).

For extra gloss: polish with compound after fully cured.

⚠️ Always spray in a ventilated area with a respirator and gloves.
