THE PLOT

It’s 1925 at The Velvet Cellar, a jazz-filled speakeasy teeming with secrets. When owner Johnny “Two Times” McGraw is found poisoned, the night takes a deadly turn. Trapped by a raging storm, mobsters, flappers, crooked politicians, and undercover detectives must uncover the truth and determine who among them is a killer. Was it revenge, ambition, or something darker? The killer is in the room, and time is running out.

HOSTING & GAMEPLAY BASICS:

★ Can I host and play at the same time?
Yes, 100%! Simply avoid reading the final reveal section in the Narration Script so you get to solve the mystery with your guests.

★ Do I need prior murder mystery experience to host?
No. The game is beginner-friendly and designed for first-time hosts.

★ How long is the game?
About 1.5-3 hours. Timing is flexible, and the host can shorten or extend discussion rounds as needed. The game is made of six rounds with suggested time limits, so you can speed things up or slow them down depending on your group.

★ What is the gameplay difficulty and style?
This game is beginner-to-medium complexity. It’s structured enough to guide first-time hosts but flexible for creative players. Guests use character booklets with backstories, objectives, and prompts, but they’re encouraged to mingle, improvise, and interact freely.

CHARACTER ASSIGNMENTS & NO-SHOWS:

★ How many people can play?
This game kit works best with 16-40 players. To ensure the best experience, I recommend a minimum of 16 guests.

★ What if I have more than 40 players?
If you’re hosting 41-45 players, your PDF download includes a complementary Expansion Pack for access to five additional characters!

★ What if I have fewer than 16 players?
You can run the game with a smaller group. Just expect that some relationships or clues won’t appear, which is totally normal with a reduced cast. If you ever want help choosing roles, feel free to message me. I’m always happy to help you plan.

★ Are roles gender-flexible?
Some roles are gender-flexible. These are clearly marked in the Assigning Characters document.

★ Do I need to assign characters in advance?
Characters can be assigned and communicated to guests in advance or randomly assigned the night of the party, depending on your preference! Regardless of the option you choose, make sure all red essential roles from the Assigning Characters document are filled.

★ Can I tell people their roles before the party?
Yes. Many hosts send guests their name and role ahead of time. If you share full booklets early, just ask guests to keep their private sections secret.

★ What happens if someone cancels at the last minute?
Use the Assigning Characters guide to reassign or remove that role. Important, helpful, and supporting characters can be cut without affecting the game. If you need help with any of this, feel free to message me!

★ Do guests need to memorize their parts?
Nope! Booklets are designed for guests to read from directly. Encourage reading aloud, paraphrasing, improv, and staying in character, but no pressure to memorize.

PRINTING, PREPARATION, & MATERIALS:

★ What do I have to print before the party?
For each guest, print their character booklet. You’ll also need to print the clues and award certificates. Everything else is optional to print.

★ Can I print at home?
Yes! Everything is formatted for standard 8.5 x 11" paper for home printing.

★ Are the clues hidden or handed out?
Most clues are assigned directly to characters. A few are open clues that can be hidden, displayed, or handed out, depending on your preference.

★ What should people wear?
1920s glam encouraged! Think flapper dresses, suspenders, pinstripes, feather boas, pearls, or anything Gatsby-inspired.

★ What is the setting of the game?
The game takes place in 1925 at the Velvet Cellar, an underground speakeasy.

CONTENT & APPROPRIATENESS:

★ Is it family-friendly? What about church groups or schools?
The game is rated PG-13 for innuendo and mature themes, such as murder and alcohol, but there’s no explicit language, drugs, violence, or sexual content. Alcohol is mentioned historically (speakeasy, bootlegging) and can easily be swapped for “mocktails,” “underground lounge,” or “servers.” Many teachers and church groups have played it with great success.

★ I don’t want any alcohol, gambling, or cigarette references, so can I change that?
Absolutely. Everything is editable, and changing professions or references will not affect gameplay.

★ Is the murderer randomized?
No. The story has a fixed murderer.

★ Can I play this game more than once?
It’s best played with a new group each time, since the ending remains the same.

★ Can the kit be customized?
Yes! Names, occupations, titles, backstory details, and decor pieces are editable.

★ When does the murder happen?
It happens before the party begins, but some hosts enjoy staging a dramatic “death” at the start. Totally optional.
