Here’s the process of making marble inlay:
1. We are crafting inlaid designs using semi-precious stones on three types of marble: White Marble, Black Marble, and Green Marble.
2. The marble used for inlaying semi-precious stones is sourced from the city of Makrana in Rajasthan, India.
3. First, the marble is cut into various shapes such as round, octagonal, rectangular, oval, and square.
4. After cutting, the surface of the marble is painted with henna (red color) to create a suitable base for sketching the geometric designs.
5. Using an emery wheel, the semi-precious stones are cut, polished, and shaped into various forms such as flowers, buds, leaves, and stems. All the cutting is done manually by skilled artisans.
6. After cutting the semi-precious stones, they are assembled to complete the motif. The stones are then placed on the marble surface to trace their outlines, ensuring the exact size of the cavities. Once traced, the stones are removed, and the marble is manually chiseled using diamond chisels and tungsten carbide chisels to create the cavities. Afterward, the stones are placed back into the cavities to check their depth and fit.
7. Once we are certain that the stones fit perfectly in the cavities, a special kind of glue is used to securely fix the semi-precious stones into the marble.
8. After completing the inlay work, the marble surface is first rubbed with sandstone to smoothen it. Then, it is polished using sandpaper to bring out the natural shine of both the marble and the semi-precious stones. Finally, a wax polish is applied to enhance the surface's luster and brilliance.
9. The most fascinating aspect of this Pietre Dure (marble inlay with hard stone) is that all the designs created by the artisans are purely a product of their imagination. Once made, each design is unique and cannot be replicated exactly. While similar in appearance, no two pieces will ever be the same.
