This tutorial gives a beginner’s lesson on bead weaving earrings and a pendant like sparkling slugs, one at a time or paired in a spiraled love embrace. Slugs in Love are my twisted variations on the common Cellini spiral, combining peyote stitch with herringbone increases. The idea for combining these techniques was originated by June Huber.

Making earrings is fast and easier than it looks. After you master the basics, use the included charts to make larger pieces like the 2 1/4 inch Slugs in Love pendant shown here or take your hand at the more advanced 3 inch Slug Fest pendant, shown in the last photo in the colors of lava. Included is also a recipe for a fourth jumbo size without photos, but my students have made them. So I know it works.

You only need a few pinches of each bead color, making this a good choice to use up your leftover seed beads from other projects. This pattern is suitable for advanced beginning bead weavers, with enough design possibilities to entertain advanced bead weavers. Trust me, once you make a small one, you'll want to make a larger and larger pieces just to watch the spirals form right in your hands. These are really satisfying to assemble, and all with just seed beads from sizes 15° to 6°. No fancy shapes required.

The tutorial is 14 pages, with over 60 full color illustrations and photographs. The tutorial gives highly detailed instructions for every step in the earrings, and then I show you large photos and give charts and commentary to help you build increasingly larger spirals using the same techniques. There are two other files which include more specific instructions that are in response to questions that my readers have had with how to generalize from the earrings to the pendants.

This listing is for the main PDF tutorial and supplementary PDFs. Materials are not included. The tutorial includes materials lists but if you are a bead weaver, you probably already have everything you need. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at gwen [at] beadinfinitum.com or convo me through Etsy.

The PDF document is 4.4 MB and can be opened with Acrobat and Adobe Reader. If you don't have Acrobat Reader, you can download it for free at www.adobe.com. I have received a few questions about how to apply the theory to making the pendants. So I added a short MS Word file that gives some extra explanation on how to make the pendants.
