Rare antique circa 1800's Victorian hand-cut Crystal Obelisk.

These were handmade in the mid to late 1800's.

The image was hand cut into the back side (reverse cut), and when viewed from the front, the image appears three-dimensional.

This made a wonderful optical illusion that the Victorians loved to portray.

The Victorians took the passion for the obelisk form to crystal glass, cutting and painting these decorative glass items in ingenious ways. Often, as in this example, the cuts on a 3-sided obelisk produced an image of a garden urn. The 2 back sides were then painted with plants and flowers. A little touch of magic, and very decorative!

This example likely once had painted flowers on the backside.

This piece is in exemplary condition, there is only one tiny flea bite chip on the back side on one of the corners and it is not visible from the front. There are also some ver light scratches on the base and a flaw in the crystal as per photos. (Photo with toothpick point to chip.)
