This is an authentic 19th-century French chemise made from an amazing heavyweight, HAND-SPUN, and HANDWOVEN linen! The pleated back details and buttons (hand-carved!!!) are absolutely fascinating—a true masterpiece of craftsmanship and creativity. This antique long shirt likely dates to the 1840s-1870s, as suggested by the fabric and the detail on the back—was that loop for a cravat? This may indicate that the chemise was used as a day shirt rather than a nightgown.

Embellished with handmade "HJ" red monograms, this antique French chemise is a treasure for those who reconstruct historical garments, work in the movie or theater industry, or simply appreciate the beauty of antique fashion and handmade pieces. ***While originally a man's chemise, please note that people in earlier times were generally smaller, so this garment may better fit a petite woman today. I’d love to see it as a summer dress!

I have freshly laundered this 19th-century French chemise, so it’s ready to be worn or gifted immediately. Measurements and other details are provided below. Thank you!

Flat-Lay Measurements (I would say it is XS size, but please DO READ measurements below and if in doubt, you can always send me a message - I usually reply very quickly):

- Chest: approx. 56cm or 22"
- Width of lower hem: approx. 73cm or 29"

Number of items: One (1)

Date: Circa 1840s-1870s

Condition: Excellent, I don't notice any particular flaw.

More than a century ago, a person, most likely a woman, spent countless hours leaning over a piece of fabric, tugging a needle to make this chemise. Searching, acquiring, cleaning and finally offering them a new home is my way of honoring the labour of love of generations of embroiders, weavers and others who devoted themselves to create such fine linens which are becoming extremely rare in today's world.

*** Please note that I try my best to acquire only items in almost perfect condition or with small imperfections. However, since all these items are very old, they may present some signs of their story. Try to see those (if any) as part of the item's beauty and not as defects.

Please contact me if you need any additional information or if in doubt before purchase. Thank you!
