Storyline: Brother Felix has been in charge of the church grounds for over 30 years, taking great pride in keeping everything neat and orderly. But this year, the church decided to hire volunteers to help set up the Easter decorations and egg hunt. Unfortunately, the volunteers moved his potted lilies, misplaced his gardening tools, and trampled over his perfectly maintained grass. Feeling unappreciated, Felix decided to teach everyone a lesson by hiding the Easter eggs, locking away the pastor’s sermon notes, and removing the Easter lilies from the pews. Just when all hope seemed lost, a mysterious note was found taped to the altar. It read, “decipher the 18 words I have left as clues to restore Easter joy before the service begins!”

How long does this activity take to complete?
It really depends on a lot of things. Estimated completion time is 30+ minutes but is based on the kids’ puzzle experience, decoding skills, critical thinking skills, age and group size.

How many kids can play at once?
As many as you want! Personally, I prefer to let kids work alone or with a partner, however, you can play in small groups as well! I do not suggest groups of more than 4. The reason I like to use partners is to promote competition and teamwork. Have the kids compete against each other for better engagement.

How do I set up the Escape Room?
To set up the escape room, you simply need to print, hide and play! It’s that easy! Everything you need is included in your download. You don’t need any locks, envelopes or special equipment. To extend the game experience, you can hide the puzzle cards around the house or classroom like a scavenger hunt. Fun hiding spots: under the coffee table, behind a door, hanging on shower wall, in a dresser, etc. The harder they are to find, the more fun the kids have!

Do I need locks, envelopes or special equipment?
NOT AT ALL! This was created to make your life easier! Perfect for last-minute party planners! There are no fancy envelopes to stuff or odd shapes to cut out. All you will need to do is to print the game, hide the clues (OPTIONAL) and play!

What if the kids get stuck on one of the puzzles?
First off, let them think for a bit! This is where critical thinking skills come in. If you have a kid truly struggling, consider showing them a hint card. I only let kids see a hint card if they have been stuck on a puzzle for an extended period of time. You can also decide that each team or kid gets to use only a certain number of hint cards. If you set a limit to the use of hint cards, they will spend more time trying to solve the puzzles (that’s the whole goal!).

Where do kids start?
It does NOT matter the order in which they solve each puzzle. Kids will work at different paces, so don’t worry!

How do kids know if their answers are correct? First of all, the answers to every puzzle are a common word related to the theme of the game. At the end of the escape room, they will be asked to unscramble a final mystery word using letters from the word search. If they can’t create a word, it is likely that one or more of their answers is wrong.

Who can play the game?
We recommend ages 8+. However, younger kids can definitely play if they have help from an adult or older kid.

Do I have to print out the game materials for every single kid?
The goal here is to save paper, so all you have to do is print the puzzle decoders ONE time. Kids will be instructed to NOT write on the puzzle pages and instead record their answers on their own answer sheet. This does require some “back and forth” so this paper saving method may work best with older kids. If you have younger kids, you may consider printing all puzzle pages for each kid or team to write on. The puzzles require many letter replacement ciphers and allowing kids to have their own puzzle pages to write on will make it easier for them.
