The bronze phurba is a very beautiful, rare piece! I bought it in a Tibetan store in Boudhanath in Nepal.

Dimensions: Phurba: 17 cm long, 3.5 cm wide

Mahakala - the wrathful deity

In the complete picture, he holds in his hands a cleaver and a skull bowl filled with blood or brain matter, which he holds in front of his heart (symbolizing wisdom and method and the cutting off of all misconceptions), a prayer chain made of skulls (with which he incessantly recites mantras for the benefit of all beings). The symbols of death, threat and destruction are deliberately used to teach people who are afraid of death the true death, the death of the In this illustration, Mahakala's head is shown.

In Tibetan, Mahakala is called Mgon Po Nag Po (Gönpo Nagpo).
The name Mahakala comes from Sanskrit and means:
Maha = great, kala= time.
There are three related words in Nepalese:
Kalaha = quarrel, dispute
Kala = art, craft, technique
Kal = time, age, old age, death
There is also the word: kalo = black.
Mahakala is usually translated as “the great black one”, whereby “black” at least has an affinity to death and dispute.

The meaning and use of the phurba:

The phurba is a symbol of protection and is used in Buddhism to ward off negative influences. The three-edged blade of the phurba comes from the mouth of a dragon. A snake sits on the blade; it is the protector of Buddhist teachings.

In Tibetan rituals, the shape of a demon is formed from fruit. This is followed by purification through prayer, protection by putting on a ritual robe and invoking the protective deities. This is followed by a longer ritual in which mantras are repeatedly spoken and finally the phurba is thrust into the fruit figure while a “completion mantra” is proclaimed. Fruit is used because fruit is a carrier of life and can therefore absorb the demonic powers on behalf of other life (e.g. the person seeking help).
