I got up before dawn and drove the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina with one goal in mind: find a shot that had it all. That sounds simple enough, but it rarely is. The "Blue Ridge," as the locals lovingly call it, is one of the oldest mountain ranges on Earth, and getting her to cooperate for a single frame is another story entirely.
The challenge was real. Rhododendrons bloom for only a narrow window each summer, and finding a classic long-range blue ridge mountain view where the flowers frame the scene perfectly? You are mostly guessing and driving and hoping.
That morning, the mist was still settling into the valleys. The air smelled like pine and cool earth. I rounded a bend and stopped cold. There they were, wild magenta rhododendrons spilling over the ridge's edge, two dark firs standing like sentinels, and behind them, ridge after ridge fading into that signature hazy blue, all the way to the horizon.
They call this range the "Land of the Sky" for a reason. Standing there, camera raised, I understood it completely. This is ancient Appalachia, layered and quiet and impossibly wide.
