Tanner was born in Pittsburgh, studied under Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and moved permanently to Paris in 1891 — partly to escape the racism that blocked his career in America, and partly drawn by the artistic freedom and cosmopolitan energy of the French capital. He became a celebrated figure in Parisian artistic circles, known above all for his luminous biblical paintings and his extraordinary sensitivity to light. After a trip to Algeria in 1908, he began travelling regularly to the western coast of North Africa, visiting Tangier and absorbing the intense, penetrating quality of the Moroccan sun that Eugène Delacroix had described a generation earlier as unlike any light in Europe. Gateway, Tangier was painted during these years — possibly as a study for a larger work, Entrance to the Casbah, which he completed shortly after.

The painting shows one of Tangier's ancient gateways: a pointed Moorish arch set into a high earth-coloured wall, a single white-robed figure passing through into the shadow beyond, a glimpse of blue sky above. Tanner painted it with the quiet, atmospheric restraint that defines his best work — no drama, no exoticism, no romanticisation of the foreign.
