Highlights
Handwritten Handpainted Icon | St Marina the Great Martyr
Sacred icons are “windows into heaven.” They transport us into the heavenly realm and create a portal through which it can enter our earthly existence.
Written in prayer and consecrated at our holy monastery, our unique icons are original compositions (rather than copies of mass-produced images).
The icons are painted according to the ancient Byzantine iconographic technique, using organic ingredients and pigments, and 24k genuine gold leaf.
Traditional Gesso
Following ancient, iconographic tradition, our handwritten icons are painted on organic gesso panels: pure pine boards that have been hand-selected, cut and sanded by the nuns, and prepared with a chalk and rabbit skin liquid composition that seals the wood and primes it for painting. Once hard, the gesso is then sanded to a smooth finish before being painted with natural earth pigments mixed with a binder made from egg yolk.
- Prices for compositions involving more than one figure vary. Please get in touch for more information and to discuss details.
- We also produce larger icons (on custom, made to order, gesso panels). Please get in touch for more information and to discuss details.
