Vintage Britain in Pictures Book Collection: First Editions, 1940s British History

Britain in Pictures book collection, vintage books, First Edition Britain in Pictures books, a collection of 70 Britain in Pictures books.

The fascinating Britain in Pictures series, published in the 1940s, were produced by Collins to be affordable and readable, with the ultimate goal of boosting morale and national pride by drawing attention to the elements of the national identity which made Britain great.

Over one hundred titles were published on a broad variety of topics, grouped into nine main subject areas: history, arts and crafts, literature, education and religion, science, medicine and engineering, society, topography, sport and natural history.

The series features titles written by a broad range of British experts, some very much a part of the academic establishment while others were lesser-known enthusiasts and non-professional writers. Included in this collection of 70 books are notable writers including George Orwell (The British People), Graham Greene (British Dramatists), Cecil Beaton (British Photographers), and Vita Sackville-West (English Country Houses). Other are known for their art, for example British Sport and its oil painting of Jockeys or historical interest such as The English at the seaside which includes a commentary of the English seaside in the age of the hydrogen bomb. Each volume was limited to a maximum of 48 pages, and consequently an emphasis was placed upon making the volumes as attractive as possible, this includes the modernist covers, with their graduated colours chosen to look attractive in a bookcase.

The vast majority of this collection are First Editions and in very good vintage condition, many were given as gifts, some with charming gift plates. Some are mint, others show minor signs of wear, predominantly to dust covers. Please message for more information or individual photos of any books you choose.
