COACHELLA VALLEY BUTTON-UP x CROCHET PATTERN

This crochet pattern is an original design from my book Summer Crochet: 19 Delicate Designs with Simple Lace and Timeless Silhouettes, first published in 2025 by Page Street Publishing.

Summer Crochet can be found at these retailers: https://knitsnknots.ca/summer-crochet/

ABOUT
Consisting of delicate eyelet columns, a sophisticated buttonband and a turndown collar, this menswear-inspired button-up will make any outfit look effortless. In spite of the seemingly boxy shape, several thoughtful shaping details are incorporated into the construction of this retro-inspired design to elevate the fit, including shoulder shaping, underarm shaping, and shaping around the neckline to allow the collar to land at the perfect spot.

Named after the world-famous desert oasis, this edgy button-up is breathable and lightweight, a befitting outfit choice for hot summer days. An androgynous, relaxed fit allows this shirt to lean feminine or masculine depending on how you choose to style it. The photos shown were taken in Joshua Tree National Park, just a stone’s throw away from Coachella Valley.

This pattern is fully written + charted.

MATERIALS
Yarn: DK—Hobbii Happy Place Solid in colorway “Almond (01)”
- 50% cotton, 50% Superwash wool
- 273 yds (250 m) per 3.5 oz (100 g) ball
- Find this yarn on hobbii.com or visit yarnsub.com to find comparable substitutes available in your region.

Note that there are two Happy Place yarn lines: Solid and Melange. Be sure to check out both when choosing your desired colorway!

Yardage Required: 5 (5, 6, 6, 7) (7, 7, 8, 9) balls or approximately 1225 (1350, 1450, 1600, 1700) (1850, 1980, 2025, 2275) yds (1120 [1234, 1326, 1463, 1554] [1692, 1811, 1852, 2080] m)

Yarn Substitution: Visit knitsnknots.ca/coachella-valley-button-up for an extensive list of yarn substitutes and yarns used during pattern testing. Substitute Hobbii Happy Place with any similar light DK-weight (category #3) yarn that matches gauge. Most fibers should work fine in this project, particularly wool, cotton or blends of these fibers. Avoid 100% bamboo yarns, as these will be too slippery; a little grip is needed to avoid excessive stretching. Note that DK weight is sometimes referred to as “8-ply” in Australia.

Hook: Size U.S. E/4 (3.5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

Notions: Tapestry needle, 7 locking stitch markers, several more stitch markers (optional) to help with seaming, 5 buttons measuring approximately 0.75 inch (2 cm) in diameter (other sizes will work, too, as long as you adjust the spacing and size of each buttonhole accordingly), thread in a color similar to your yarn color (or similar to your button color depending on your preference) for attaching the buttons, sewing needle (or any needle that fits through the holes on your buttons when threaded)

MEASUREMENTS + SIZING
See full sizing chart in Etsy photos.

GAUGE
4 x 4” (10 x 10 cm) = 18 dc and 9 rows

Block your swatch the same way you would your finished garment. Within 4 inches (10 cm), you should have 18 dc sts and 9 rows in order to achieve the finished measurements in the sizing chart.

PATTERN NOTES
Skill Level: Intermediate

Sizing: This shirt is written in nine sizes as follows: XS (S, M, L, XL) (2X, 3X, 4X, 5X). Make sure to follow the numbers for your size only. An “x” indicates the instruction is not applicable to your size.

Stitch Counts: Stitch counts are listed after each row/round. If no stitch count is given, there has been no change since the previous row/round. If only one number is provided, it applies to all sizes.

Right Side/Wrong Side: While each individual panel is reversible, there is a right side (RS) and wrong side (WS) to this shirt once it is seamed together. You will designate a “right side” later in the pattern when you crochet the collar.

Turning Chain: The turning chain counts as a stitch for most of this pattern. Each beginning ch-3 counts as 1 dc and each beginning ch-4 counts as (1 dc+1 ch). The beginning ch-1 for the single crochet rows in the Buttonband, the collar and the finishing rows does not count as a stitch.

Construction: The body of this shirt is worked in three panels: two identical Front Panels and one Back Panel. Each panel is worked side-to-side (lengthwise) to create distinct vertical stitching emphasized by the Eyelet Rows. Shoulder shaping is incorporated into the top edge of the Back Panel using simple increases and decreases to improve the drape. Neckline shaping is worked into each Front Panel to build the foundation onto which the Collar is worked. Each Front Panel is completed after working the Buttonband. The Front Panels are seamed to the Back Panel along the tops of the shoulders and the sides, leaving two openings for sleeves.

This is my first time making a wearable crochet garment (I’ve only made a scarf before), so I was a little nervous going into an “intermediate” pattern. But I’m so glad I chose this one! The pattern is extremely well written, clear, and easy to follow. Even as a beginner, I was able to understand the instructions and feel confident working through each section. It’s obvious a lot of thought went into making the pattern accessible and detailed. I’m still in the process of making the top, but so far it’s been a great experience and I’ve learned a lot. I would definitely recommend this pattern, even if you’re newer to crochet and want to challenge yourself with your first wearable.

Really easy to follow pattern! I made it for my husband and had to increase the size of the arm holes but otherwise fit perfectly based on the measurements provided!
