The inner diameter is the measurement inside the ring (from edge to edge).

you can measure with a ruler the distance between your piercing hole and the edge of your nostril.

The standard inner diameter for:
Nose ring is 7 mm
Septum ring is 8 mm
Helix / Tragus is 7 mm

The stud is so beautiful and nicely made, but the part that goes through the actual flesh of the nose (so, the straight part of the pin, before the curl) is a little too short, so I will be getting it straightened by a goldsmith. It is a lovely piece of jewellery though and Yael has been very helpful.
