“Relativity” is a famous lithograph created by Dutch artist Maurits Cornelis Escher in 1953. The work depicts an imaginary world in which the laws of gravity seem not to exist as they do in our world. There are stairs going up and down in all directions, but each group of people seems to have its own direction of gravity. Some walk on the walls, others on the ceiling, but everything is “normal” for them. Perspectives intersect in impossible ways, creating a surreal and fascinating effect. Escher uses the interplay between geometry and perspective to challenge our perception of reality, and “Relativity” is one of his masterpieces in this regard.
