Mid-Century Modern Coffee Table, Kidney Bean Shaped, handmade out of Walnut Plywood, Extra Large Version.
There are many versions of the kidney bean table out there, and after looking for inspiration in tables of the past, this is my interpretation. I wanted the curve of the table to be continuous, while keeping the proportions pleasing to the eye. I wanted it to be sleek and modern looking, while staying true to the original design. I also wanted to use materials that perfectly fit the period, to complement people's existing mid-century collections. I ended up making one for our use and we really love it. It fits in nicely with the other mid-century pieces in our family room. It has a cool little cutout area that makes it different and unique. The spot is perfect for enjoying a cup of coffee or tea, and makes it easy to get to the sofa.
Here are the details, and I am trying to think of everything as I ask a lot of questions when researching:
Constructed of high grade walnut plywood. Not birch plywood that is dyed to look like walnut, this is high quality walnut veneer plywood. No dyes, just the natural wood. There is no paint to chip off or scratch, or a super glossy surface that ages quickly. Just natural wood that is finished with oil and wax by hand. No attempt has been made to hide the plywood edging, no dyes or edge-bands. Charles and Ray Eames used plywood in their classic designs and made it part of the design, so can everyone else.
Dimensions are as follows:
53" long at longest points
28" wide at widest point
19" wide at "scoop" point
11" wide at "skinny" point
16 7/8" high
The edge of the table is angled strongly away from the top, making it look light and modern.
Walnut hardwood legs (3) turned by hand, tapered sleekly from top to bottom.
Mounting hardware - angled to give it that mid-century look.
Finished by hand with 5 coats oil and wax. I really and truly hand apply the finish one coat at a time, and I think the results are worth the extra effort. It is best described as a very matte sheen, not too glossy, not at all dull, just enough sheen. Comes with care instructions for finish (no furniture polish, just a little water and a clean cloth).
You will not get this exact table, I will make one for you from scratch and it will take 3-4 weeks for me to make it for you (4 weeks at most, it could be 1 week if I just finished a batch of them, send me a note and I will give an updated timing forecast). It will be stamped, signed, and numbered on the bottom as well.
Please note, this is a three-legged coffee table, not a four-legged coffee table.
Table can be made of walnut hardwood (not shown) as well. The table pictured is skinny side left for reference.
