The Prints of Albrecht Durer
The Rhinoceros, 1515
Full Size Reproduction: 12.4 x 9.7 inches
Durer’s famous print of ‘The Rhinoceros’ was for an animal he never saw. He sketched it and carved his woodcut solely from a description that appeared in a Portuguese newsletter sent to Nuremberg. The print contains five lines of description across the top.
“On May 1, 1513 was brought from India to the great and powerful king Emanuel of Portugal at Lisbon a live animal called a rhinoceros. His form here is reproduced. It has the color of a speckled tortoise and is covered with thick scales. It is like an elephant in size, but lower on its legs and almost invulnerable. It has a strong horn on its nose, which it sharpens on stones.
The stupid animal is the elephant’s deadly enemy. The elephant is very frightened of it, as, when they meet, it runs with its head down between its front legs and gores the stomach of the elephant and throttles it, and the elephant cannot fend it off.
Because the animal is so well armed, there is nothing that the elephant can do about it. It is also said that the rhinoceros is fast, lively and cunning.”
This print of the Rhinoceros was the only version printed in his lifetime.
Albrecht Durer(1471-1528) was the leading artist of the Northern Renaissance and the greatest printmaker in the history of western art. A prolific draftsman, he elevated the aesthetic quality of printmaking and put it on equal terms with the drawings and paintings of the Italian Renaissance. Artists across Europe admired and copied Dürer's innovative and powerful prints. His copperplate engravings of Knight, Death, and the Devil, St. Jerome in his Study, and Melencolia I are still universally acclaimed today.

**the giclee process produces a high quality, fine art reproduction from a high-resolution digital file of an image. The file is then printed with a high-resolution photo generation printer on a fine art paper. Most artists and working photographers today use the giclee process to produce reproductions of their original artwork and photographs.
As with any original art or fine art reproduction, it is recommended that prints are framed and displayed under glass to prevent color fade or shift over the years.
