This fabric is 36 inches wide and is sold by the yard. Multiple yards come as on continuous piece. It is 100% cotton.
It weighs approximately 10 ounces per yard.
Such a bright red! The color red in the fabric is pure RED. It has an orange tint in the picture, but it really is red!
It was hand woven in the highlands of Guatemala on a treadle loom. The weaving process is one that has been handed down through the generation in Guatemala. The ikat or jaspe stripe is so typical of the traditional weaving. It tells a story and make the fabric even more gorgeous.
This is a medium weight fabric. If you have ordered Rabinal Red from me before, please note that this is the same design, but it is a heavier weight. It would also make very nice napkins of lined place mats.
Usually, I name the fabrics but this one was named by the weavers. It is really named Rabinal Rojo - Rabinal is a small village in the southern part of the department of Baja Verapaz.
There is also a traditional Mayan theatrical play called the Rabinal Achí written in the K'iche' language and performed in the town of Rabinal. It is rare example of a pre-Hispaic drama from the fifteenth century. It is performed on Saint Paul’s day on 25 January.
The last picture is of a flower seller on the steps to Santo Tomas in Chichicastenango.
