One of my hobbies is making furniture – I love working with wood and I enjoy the challenges and puzzles involved in constructing beautiful, sturdy furniture. Making jewelry is similar in many ways, but metal is much less forgiving than wood: Everything must be extremely precise…you can’t close a gap by tightening a screw or a clamp; when joining metal, there can’t even be a gap in the first place.

Making this ring made me think of the similarities and differences in furniture construction and metalsmithing. Building a box is one of the basics of woodworking, and it’s also one of the basics of metalsmithing. But the techniques used are radically different (for one thing, if you tried to solder a wood box together you’d end up with a pile of charcoal!), and, in this case, the functions are enormously different as well. Although this ring is a box, the side that touches your finger is open, so you can’t put anything in it: It’s strictly ornamental (which contradicts the very essence of a wood box). Or is it? Maybe it has the ability to hold something intangible.

Due to the half-round/half-flat profile of the ring, it will fit a size 7 up to size 7.75. However, it cannot be resized. If you wish to have this ring in a different size, I can make a similar ring for you, but it would not be exactly the same.
