  • Materials: Wedgwood Pearlware Transferware Platter

This 19th century Wedgwood Pearlware Peace platter measures 16.5" by 13.75" and features an unusual design consisting of a pair of doves perched on a flaming torch and quiver. The torch and quiver are crossed over each other and bound together by a long curling ribbon. The image includes a series of three olive branches, further emphasizing the theme of peace. The shoulder of the platter is decorated in a Neoclassical Robert Adam style pattern made up of stylized laurel garland with a series of pendants suspended by long pieces of ribbon tied in a bow. The design also includes olive branches. The rim of the platter is finished with a dentil motif studded with square medallions having a foliate design.

The platter is in good condition with no cracks or repairs and displays beautifully. As an antique item, the piece shows signs of use commensurate with age including light utensil marks to the face and a flat 1/8" chip to the face along with some minor wear and areas of discoloration to the rim. There are slight irregularities in the transfer pattern as well as flecks of material caught in the glaze, both of which are commonly found in antique earthenware. The back of the piece bears the pattern name "PEACE" printed in blue and also has the impressed word "WEDGWOOD" and "P" for pearlware, along with the letters "DJF" indicating a production date of 1877. The platter measures 16.5" by 13.75" and the rim stands 1.5" from the tabletop. The piece weighs in at 4lbs 5oz.

This charming Wedgwood platter would be a great addition to a collection of antique transfer decorated pearlware, or works equally well as a stand alone decorative accent. An unusual find!

Please note that due to the value of this item, the listing will be fully insured.

A note on Pearlware:
Pearlware, termed "Pearl White" by Josiah Wedgwood, was first marketed around 1779. Its distinctive color was achieved by using cobalt in the glaze, giving pearlware pieces a bluish tint.
