Werner Heisenberg, born in 1901, was a theoretical physicist best known for his 'uncertainty principle' published in 1927, which asserts a limit to the precision with which certain pairs of physical properties of a particle can simultaneously be known. As Heisenberg stated, the more precisely the position of a particle is determined, the less precisely its momentum can be known, and vice versa. Heisenberg was a pioneer in the field of quantum mechanics and in 1932 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics "for the creation of quantum mechanics".
