Edwin Hubble, born in 1889, was an American astronomer. He profoundly changed the understanding of the universe by confirming the existence of galaxies other than the Milky Way. He also devised the most commonly used system for classifying galaxies by grouping them according to their appearance in photographic images. The Hubble Space Telescope, which helps scientists understand how planets and galaxies form, is named in his honor.
