WORLD GLOBE | Nystrom 16-inch Pictorial Relief Globe | Vintage (c.1955-1956) Extra-Large Mid-Century Classroom Globe | Cold War USSR | Danish Modern Stand
D E S C R I P T I O N
Presenting a MASSIVE world globe made by Nystrom. This desirable extra-large classroom globe features bright geo-political graphics and an unusual and very decorative Mid-Century/Danish Modern style stand with modern circular, open base. The stand also allows the globe to be tilted up and down as well as to spin. Globe dates to the mid 1950's (approx.1955-56) and showcases the rapidly changing political landscape of the early Cold War era. Globe depicts countries that have disappeared from the modern map, including:
AFRICA
- Bechuanaland 1885-1966 (modern Botswana)
- Ivory Coast (changed name to Cote d'Ivoire in 1986)
- Dahomey (renamed Benin in 1972)
- Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland 1953-1963
- Tanganyika Trust Territory 1946-1961 (modern Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania)
- Spanish Guinea 1926-1968 (modern Equatorial Guinea)
- Belgian Congo 1908-1960 (modern Democratic Republic of the Congo)
- Spanish Sahara 1884-1975 (modern Western Sahara)
- French Equatorial Africa 1910-1958 (modern Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Gabon)
- British Somaliland 1884-1960 (in present north-west Somalia)
- French Somaliland 1946 - 1967 (modern Djibouti)
- South-West Africa 1915-1990 (modern Namibia)
ASIA
- East Pakistan 1955-1971 (modern Bangladesh)
- West Pakistan (modern Pakistan)
- North Vietnam and South Vietnam zones (joined to form Vietnam in 1976)
- Sarawak and British North Borneo (pre-Malaysian federation) 1963
EUROPE
- USSR (dissolved in 1991)
- Czechoslovakia 1918-1991 (modern Czech Republic and Slovakia)
- Yugoslavia 1922-1992 (modern Croatia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, and Kosovo)
- East and West Germany (1949-1990)
- Romania spelled "Rumania"
- Belarus is referred to as "White Russia"
MIDDLE EAST
- Trucial Oman 1820-1971 (present United Arab Emirates)
PACIFIC
- Netherlands New Guinea 1949-1962 (modern Papua and West Papua in Indonesia)
- Territory of the Papua 1883-1975 (present Papua New Guinea)
SOUTH AMERICA
- British Guiana 1814-1966 (modern Guyana)
- British Honduras 1862-1981 (renamed Belize)
The globe also depicts the names of oceans, seas, currents, and drifts and the limits of floating ice (cool...pun not intended)

- Globe's colors remain bright but the blue of the ocean is somewhat faded

Very Good
Globe is in overall Very Good condition. Colors on the globe are relatively bright with no large areas of fading. The continents remain brighter as the blue of the ocean is somewhat dingy. There is wear along the paper gores of the globe and the wear has exposed the white paper underneath (please see photos). It appears that the wear has affected both sides of all the gores on the globe (please see photos). Areas of a darker color transfer can be seen in the oceans; it is especially noticeable just south of the equator through the Tropic of Capricorn. Large tear in the surface paper of the globe just east of Samoa in the Pacific Ocean (last photo). Small area of white paint transfer in the Tuamoto Archipelago in the South Pacific (last photo). Scattered small areas of white paint transfer throughout globe surface; this was most likely the result of the globe spinning and hitting a white painted wall. Light scratches to the surface. Some very small dings to the globe, including several small marks in the Atlantic and two.75 inch long shallow dents in the Indian Ocean just east of Madagascar. Several small marks in the Indian Ocean that resemble brown crayon. The Indian Ocean contains the most wear. The wear to the globe most likely resulted from its use in the classroom. The equator is printed onto the globes surface. Globe comes with original metal time zone disc.
Globe has a very unusual and very cool Mid-Century Danish Modern stand. The stand is made from a piece of blond, turned wood and has a black knob on the side. I believe that the knob allowed the globe move up and down. The knob appears to be loose and the globe is wobbly as the result of the loose knob. Globe can still spin freely and can still be raised up and down. The turned wood stand does have some wear and surface scratches to the wood. A piece of masking tape has been wrapped around the wood stand. There are faint marking in pencil on the tape that read: "Room 7 5th Grade". The masking tape is in several pieces and has left a sun bleached ring around the stand (please see photos). The globe base is constructed from a piece of circular brushed aluminum. Two small areas of discoloration to the interior of the base. Light surface scratching to the metal of base and axis. The wear to the globe and stand do not detract from the overall aesthetic of the globe; rather the surface wear contributes to the vintage character of the piece. An incredibly decorative and desirable globe!

- Shipping price is set for insured USPS Parcel Post due to the size of the globe and the box that it will require. Please allow 6-8 business days for globe to arrive once shipped. This estimate is for the continental US; shipping to Alaska and Hawaii and international destinations will take longer. Shipping time for international customers vary and depend upon the package's destination. International orders: please allow up to eight weeks for your package to complete its journey and clear customs.
- The USPS is subject to weather and volume of mail. The expected delivery dates are estimates provided by USPS. These estimates are usually accurate but occasionally a package may arrive a little earlier or a little later than the given estimate. Please don't be alarmed if it looks like your package has taken up permanent residence in the Denver/Aurora sorting hub. I have found the USPS to be very reliable. However, they may not always scan a package along its shipping route; this is especially common with larger and odd-shaped packages.
- Priority shipping is available for this item, but due to the large size of the globe, Priority shipping will be INSANELY EXPENSIVE! If you would like USPS Priority Mail please contact me PRIOR to purchasing.
- Due to the dimensions of the globe, shipping to Alaska and Hawaii will be an additional $25.00 for a total shipping cost of $49.99. Please contact me prior to purchase and I can adjust the shipping price for you.
- Tracking is included in the shipping price for customers in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and most EU countries
- Insurance is included in the shipping price. Shipping is provided by the USPS (for domestic Priority Mail) and by U-PIC insurance (for items shipped domestic USPS Parcel Post and international orders).
- Due to the purchase price of the globe, this will ship with Signature Confirmation. You will NEED TO SIGN FOR YOUR PACKAGE IN ORDER FOR IT TO BE DELIVERED. This is a requirement of the insurance company that I use and it prevents expensive items from being left on porches, entryways, or other exposed areas.
- Shipping is a bit on the high side due to the dimensions of the globe. The shipping price listed is a realistic estimate. A refund on shipping overages of $2.00 or more will be issued via original payment method. I will only discount shipping if multiple items are purchased. Multiple item shipping discount has already been calculated and no coupon is required. Please do not ask me to discount shipping when purchasing one item. Please do not make an "offer" on shipping. The shipping price is a realistic estimate based on the item's dimensions.

- International shipping is available to some countries. Please contact me for a shipping price if your country is not listed. VAT and customs taxes may be added to any international purchases; this is especially true for buyers in the UK and in Scandinavia. International buyers must be familiar with their country's shipping laws and regulations. I have no control over the duties and taxes that your country may charge you once the package has cleared customs. If you have any questions, please contact your local post office. This handy website will help you calculate the cost of potential import duties: http://www.dutycalculator.com
- Due to problems with slow or non-delivery I am unable to ship to Mexico and Brazil.
- Any import fees, brokerage fees, VAT, etc. are separate charges determined by your country's import laws. These fees go directly to your government. I do not receive any of these fees.
- If you do not claim your package for any reason (duties, custom fees, etc.) and your package is returned to me unopened, I will only refund you the cost of the item and that will only be if the box was returned in unopened condition and the item purchased is in the exact same condition as when I posted the package. Shipping fees will not be refunded as I fulfilled my obligation in packaging and shipping the item and have already paid for the non-refundable postage. Please only purchase the item if you are familiar with your country's import duties and are comfortable paying any additional VAT, taxes, of handling fees that YOUR country will charge.
- UK customers: purchases totaling £15 or more are subject to the current VAT rate. An additional brokerage fee or customs charge may also be applied to your purchase. These fees are separate from the shipping price from this shop and are your responsibility. Good Things to Know:
-Please read my shop policies section before purchasing. If you have any questions or concerns regarding my items or policies, please email me before purchasing.
-Please check the photos for condition issues. If you would like additional photos or have any questions, just ask!
-Just a reminder, Etsy defines "vintage" as any item that is 20 years and older. Etsy does not allow the sale of items less than 20 years old unless the item is handmade by the seller. So, almost all the items in my shop are 20 years or older and were most likely pre-owned and pre-loved. These items are not new but are pretty great.
