This is the First Paperback Edition of "The Double Witness, Poems : 1970 - 1976" by Vermont Poet Ben Belitt. Published in 1977 by Princeton University Press, the book will be a revelation for readers unfamiliar with Belitt's work. Belitt was Professor Emeritus of Language and Literature at Bennington College. He is the noted translator of several works by Pablo Neruda and Federico Garcia Lorca.

A statement about the book by renowned literary critic Harold Bloom printed on the jacket is worth quoting:

" For several decades Ben Belitt has sustained an extraordinary lyric gift. In THE DOUBLE WITNESS , this gift has matured fully into high romantic art. Only a few poets since the death of Stevens have written meditative lyrics at once sensuous and transcendent on the level that Belitt frequently touches here. Particularly remarkable are the dozen 'Black Island' poems, Belitt's best work, where the heritage of Keats and of Hart Crane is beautifully extended."
