The pattern for this baby doll was designed with much attention to detail, and with the belief that it would be possible for even a beginner to successfully make their own doll. The book is full of everything you need to know in order to create a sweet cloth baby doll... comprehensive and detailed, step-by-step instructions, including over 300 illustrative photos. The doll is entirely made with natural materials, which are friendly for children and the earth.

I have designed this baby doll to look and feel as much like a real baby as possible:
➛ Just the right amount of chunkiness to mimic a real baby's dimpled thighs and chubby arms
➛ Sweetly curved limbs that nestle wonderfully in children's arms
➛ A bottom that allows the baby to sit and be cloth diapered
➛ An option for weighting the doll, to make her feel even more real and to give a therapeutic grounding to the child who holds her (the options for weighting include both the feet and/or the body of the doll)
➛ A soft, crocheted cap of mohair yarn hair, with an option for adding longer hair
➛ A simple embroidered face that allows the full imagination of the child to be expressed when the child plays with the doll
➛ Cotton knit skin, and natural wool stuffing that absorbs both the familiar scents of home and the warmth of the child as they play together

I hope that the process of sewing this doll brings you joy, comfort, and a steady sense of accomplishment with the completion of each step. I have tried to thoroughly explain each step of the instructions, and have included many, many photos along the way so that even beginners may successfully make a doll. Here are the needed supplies and materials.

Supplies:
• Sewing machine
• Ballpoint sewing machine needle
• Needle for handsewing
• Pins
• Fabric scissors
• Water-soluble fabric marking pen or pencil
• Flexible tape measure
• Chopstick for stuffing
• 5" long dollmaker's needle
• Crochet hook, size F
• Crochet stitch marker

Materials:
• Cotton interlock knit fabric (for skin) ~ 1/2 yd of De Witte Engel doll skin (doll jersey)
• Mohair yarn, worsted weight (for hair) ~ One skein
• Wool stuffing/batting ~ 1 lb (you will end up using approx. 13 oz, but most wool stuffing is bought in lb increments)
• Cotton stockinette tubing, 2" width ~ 14" length
• Thread (to match skin & hair colors)
• Embroidery floss (for eyes & mouth)
• Strong tying string (for shaping the head) ~ I recommend DMC pearl cotton, no. 5 or waxed dental floss

Other optional materials:
• Red beeswax crayon (for blushing cheeks)
• Sand (to weight doll) ~ 11 oz
