White Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) used to be called "soldier's wound wort". Wort means a type of plant and yarrow is a wound plant. To be knowledgeable of medicinal plants was often the difference between life and death before the convenience of our modern pharmacies. Named for Achilles, the Greek warrior who used the plant for his wounded soldiers, it is one of the oldest medicinal plants known to man and holds its place in folk medicine.
Common names of many herbs give a clue as to how they are to be used. Yarrow is also known as Knight's Milfoil, Herbe Militaris (the military herb), Nose Bleed Weed, Carpenter's Weed and Bloodwort.
The white plant found by the wayside is the type to look for, not the yellow garden varieties. It is a woody stemmed perennial plant with beautiful umbel flower heads and lacy green leaves. The flowers and leaves are collected and used fresh or dried as an infusion with organic, cold-pressed, extra-virgin olive oil.
A bit of yarrow essential oil is added for an extra boost.
If you do not want the added essential oil, it can be left out upon request.
