A BIT OF HISTORY!
Many people refer to this triptych as a Lord Bodner or a Lord Ballantine octopus. If you research for a Lord Bodner or a Lord Ballantine, you will find they are both myths. Lord Bodner and Lord Ballantine are in existence strictly for marketing purposes. The true story behind this octopus is much more fascinating. This octopus is based on early 19th-century natural history engravings created during Napoleon’s expedition to Egypt (1798–1801).

Alongside the military campaign, a team of French scientists and artists documented the plants, animals, and marine life of the region. Their work was later published in Description de l’Égypte, one of the most detailed scientific records of its time.

The original engraving, as well as the print in the triptych, shows the octopus with careful attention to texture and form, from the pattern of the skin to the structure of the arms. It comes from a time when observation and hand-drawn illustration were the primary tools of science.
