This 2cm glass pendant contains a high resolution image of the Planet Uranus and is set into a silver plated base which comes on a sterling silver medium curb chain. The rounded glass cabochon has a slightly magnifying effect which enhances the overall appearance. It is presented in a black jewellery box and has a beautiful photo card with information of the planet on the reverse and is left blank on the inside for you to write your message or greeting.
Uranus is the coldest planet in our solar system with a minimum atmospheric temperature of -224 degrees centigrade. Like the other gas giants, it has a hydrogen upper layer with some helium mixed in and below that is an icy "mantle" which surrounds a core of rock
and ice. It is the water, ammonia and methane ice crystals that give the planet its pale blue colour.
Uranus has 27 known moons and all have been named after characters created by Shakespeare and Alexander Pope: These include Oberon, Titania and Miranda. All are frozen worlds with dark surfaces.
Two sets of very thin dark coloured rings surround the planet: The ring particles are small, ranging from dust-sized particles to small boulders. There are nine inner rings and two outer rings that probably formed when one or more of Uranus’s moons were broken up in an impact. The first set of rings was discovered in 1977 and the second, was discovered in 2003 by the Hubble Space Telescope.
Uranus makes one trip around the Sun every 84 Earth years: During some parts of its orbit one or the other of its poles point directly at the Sun and get about 42 years of direct sunlight. The rest of the time they are in darkness.
In 1986, the Voyager 2 spacecraft swept past the planet at a distance of 81,500 km. It returned the first close-up images of the planet, its moons, and rings.
