These turitella shell castings are 1.5 to 3 inches long and come from the Potomic River area in Virginia, United States . (CHOOSE PACKAGE SIZE TO RIGHT OF PHOTOS) These fossil castings come from the now extinct spiral shell species Turritella Mortoni Conrad, approximately 56 to 59 million years ago in the paleocene era. These fossils are the solidified sandstone internal cavities of the turritella that over time were hardened with minerals to become hard castings, while in most cases the original shell, being softer, has dissolved away. Internal fossil molds like these are sometimes called steinkerns. The name Turritella comes from the Latin word "turritus" meaning "turreted" or "towered" which describes the spiraling tower shaped internal structure of these mollusc shells. These castings are varying shades of tan and are entirely natural and made by nature. Photos are stock photos showing typical fossils but you will not receive these exact castings. (Sorry I can't ship these to Australia or New Zealand, your customs rules are too strict and I'd have to cancel the order.)
