These wonderful textiles are an inheritance from my grandmother. Ever since I was a little child she told me that the textiles were 100 years old and this was about 20 years ago.
I can still remember how fascinating my grandmother's tales about cultivating hemp and flax were, about how they retted and spun the fibers by hand, colored everything and woven them on the loom throughout winter.
The sacks with the elaborated pattern where used as pillow covers for decorative purpose. Filled with hay they where displayed in the guest rooms to show the wealth and prowess of the host.
These textiles are, by nature, Eco-friendly! They have been made in times when a textile piece had to be durable and was designed to last through generations. All grain sacks were made using natural fibers. The inherent irregularities give them a rustic charm.
MEASUREMENTS:
between ~40-42 cm / 15-16.5 inches (1.31-1.37 feet) wide
CONDITION:This antique handwoven grain sack is in a good vintage condition, with no holes or tears. It has some stains visible in the picture. The grain sack is unwashed so maybe the stains will disappear after washing.
If you like I can wash it before sending it to you. If you want to wash it yourself please consider to do a gentle wash - Hand wash or Cool machine wash (water temperature should not exceed 40C or 105F) - because the colors used are natural colors and are probably not suited for high temperatures.
These textiles were stored in a traditional dowry chest for the last 30 - 35 years - this I know for sure but they were probably treated the same way before, as dowry was very important in older times in Romania.
