This pendant is an extremely accurate 3D laser-scanned, 3D printed, and hand-cast reduction of the face of the bronze Dancing Faun of Pompeii, which was found on October 26, 1830 in the ruins of the most opulent Roman home discovered at Pompeii—the House of the Faun, as it later became known, which was also home to the Alexander Mosaic.

The Faun is thought to be either a 2nd-century Greek original, or a very high-quality Roman copy.

Upon its discovery, as Francis Haskell and Nicholas Penny write in Taste and the Antique, "The fame of this small bronze was instantaneous ... its first cataloger described it as the finest bronze to have been excavated at Pompeii and compared it to the Barberini Faun." The original has been housed at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli ever since its discovery.

The Faun's small size made it ideal for reproduction and for decorating gardens and drawing rooms. Victorians raved about the Faun, no doubt with assurances like that from the Naples museum, which advised that "the Faun was ecstatic and not in the intoxicated condition of various other bronze Fauns from Herculaneum and Pompeii…"

His smiling face is framed by his wild beard, hair, and goat horns, and is decorated with a wreath of acorns.

In 2013 I spent a week working at the Skulpturhalle Basel plaster cast museum in Basel, Switzerland, where I 3D laser-scanned a high fidelity 19th-century plaster cast of the original Dancing Faun of Pompeii. I’ve now prepared the resulting 3D data—the first of its kind—for 3D printing wax patterns which are then hand cast in a variety of precious and semi-precious metals in the traditional lost-wax casting method.

A 2,200 year-old design, you can now wear the Faun's smiling face around your neck, in a variety of materials.

MATERIALS: Available in gold, silver, bronze, and platinum.

FINISHES: All my designs have very fine details. The "raw" finish shows all the most intricate features, and has a very fine-grained texture that creates a subtle satin finish. It's bright and pretty, and on silver it creates an unusual luminous effect. The "polished" and plated options are smooth and are nearly a mirror finish; the very finest details are slightly softened in the polishing process. The "steel-bronze" material is slightly less detailed, but has a distinct grain texture, especially in recessed areas, that creates a highlighted effect.

INCLUDES: 18" black silicone cord

PRODUCTION TIME: This pendant takes me around 12 days to produce before I can ship it to you. Sometimes I can get them done faster, and occasionally I have some pieces in stock. If you need something quickly, please contact me before placing an order and I can let you know what's possible.

MATERIAL CARE & HANDLING: Materials other than gold and platinum may tarnish, but can be polished bright again with a soft cloth.

STEEL-BRONZE ALLOY: There is color and sheen variation from piece to piece in the steel-bronze alloy. This material will oxidize, but can be buffed with a soft cloth or even fine sandpaper to make bright again and bring out highlights.

Ooo-eee! Just got my bronze Satyr. I nearly fell over I was stuck so hard with the beauty and craftmanship of this piece. It is never --I mean NEVER coming off my neck! The level of detail is exceptional. The weight is perfect --made even better for the fact that it has some thickness and substance to it... not some flimsy piece that'll easily be dented or bent. Add to that the stellar level of friendly customer service makes this my best buy online in a long time. For my own personal taste I had to douse it with some Liver of Sulpher to instantly give it that lovely brown patina.. to which I then swiped a couple of times with a polishing cloth to give it a hint of highlights. I will most definitely be buying a couple more in different finishes. Yes THAT's how much I LOVE LOVE LOVE this piece!

Received the pendant today and it is beautiful. It is the best representation of Nefertiti I have seen. It was delivered quickly and came with a bottle of cleaner. Glad I made this purchase.
