Venus de Milo Spinning Thread statuette
Materials: 3D printed nylon, Metallic chain, Acrylic
"La Vénus de Milo est un mystère"—Salomon Reinac, 1890
This fourteen-inch tall 3D printed statuette is an experimental reconstruction of the Venus de Milo's missing arms. I designed it in conjunction with this Slate story about the theory that Venus was originally depicted spinning thread: "What Was the Venus de Milo Doing With Her Arms?" by Virginia Postrel http://slate.me/1EIFLfm
I started with my own 3D capture of Venus de Milo—the most accurate 3D model of Venus de Milo in existence, which I made from an 1850 plaster cast made by the Louvre’s own studio. The arms' positions and tools were modeled after ancient Greek painted vases and diagrams by archaeologist Elizabeth Wayland Barber and others which outline this theory of Venus’ original design.
I 3D printed the final design in white plastic, and hand-painted the tools with gold metallic paint. I'm offering additional copies of this unique experimental reconstruction.
This design and experiment received press coverage from all over the world:

Ooo-eee! Just got my bronze Satyr. I nearly fell over I was stuck so hard with the beauty and craftmanship of this piece. It is never --I mean NEVER coming off my neck! The level of detail is exceptional. The weight is perfect --made even better for the fact that it has some thickness and substance to it... not some flimsy piece that'll easily be dented or bent. Add to that the stellar level of friendly customer service makes this my best buy online in a long time. For my own personal taste I had to douse it with some Liver of Sulpher to instantly give it that lovely brown patina.. to which I then swiped a couple of times with a polishing cloth to give it a hint of highlights. I will most definitely be buying a couple more in different finishes. Yes THAT's how much I LOVE LOVE LOVE this piece!
I'm absolutely in love with this piece. Fabulous work; really impressive pendant. I was lucky enough to have chosen a piece that had been in stock, so it was shipped out immediately. The packaging and care instructions/cleaning solution was a great addition. Thank you so much!
Excellent Customer Service. Advised me that he had this in stock and was able to ship immediately. So thankful that he makes this in brass as I am unable to afford a sold gold one. The craftsmanship is gorgeous! It’s small but packs a lot of detail. It’s really a perfect size. I may be getting a silver one as I usually wear silver. Fast shipping. Perfect transaction. Huge thank you!
Absolutely, amazingly, beautiful! She feels so good in my hand, can't wait to find the perfect chain for her. Thank you so much, Cosmo!
