Licensing, Commercial use and Copyright

All images in this shop are released with a Creative Commons Attribution only license (blue banners) or are in the Public Domain (green banners). You are not restricted in how you can use the images and you are allowed to adapt, share and build upon the images, even commercially. The blue bannered (Creative Commons) images require attribution online only. For example: If you print the image on a bag, you do not have to write my name on it, but if you publish the bag with the image online in a shop or social media, please mention that the image is created by M.Barran. A link to my shop would be lovely, but is not required.

Custom and personalised orders

All custom work, such as logo design, starts at £500 (GBP). I will also need to reserve 8 weeks for completion. If you need a file in a different size, resolution or format, there is no extra charge. If I can do it, I will need to reserve 3 working days.

Can I use these images on items I sell on Etsy?

In 2025 Etsy updated its creativity standards. By the new rules you cannot sell items made from premade art (like the art in this shop) onto premade items. This means that any of my designs cannot be used as they are on print on demand projects and sold on Etsy. Likewise you cannot sell stickers, decals, temporary tattoos, etc or resell the files themselves on Etsy (even the ones I've dedicated to the public domain). You can still use the art work if it is added onto an item that you yourself have made. This is close to the original intent behind me releasing some of my artwork files for download, to support other artisans.

This is a slightly altered version of the Snaptun stone engraving from Viking Denmark depicting the Viking trickster god Loki. The Snaptun stone was a blacksmith's hearth stone, pointing at Loki's connection with fire.

The story behind the image

The Viking god Loki was a complex character, it is his offspring that bring the end of the worlds, but it is also because of him the gods have their greatest treasures.

The Snaptun stone image that this line art is based on is thought to re-present Loki, because of the lips. Loki lost a wager to the dwarves that created the great Viking treasures. The price of that wager was his head, which Loki gladly offered... but he also reminded that his neck was not part of the deal. As they had not defined where the head started and neck ended, they could not come to a conclusion. Instead in anger the dwarves sewed Loki's lips shut. Loki ripped his mouth open and the thread did not break, hence the ragged look.
