It was laid on as just a very uniform edge around the phone case, didn't have the jagged edging that made it look unique in the pictures. It also wore off within the first week. Given that the item shipped from Italy (which took forever through no fault of the seller), and was overall VERY good quality, I decided to just keep it to protect my phone. However, I did want to warn others of the wearing off, since it does cost extra.
