According to the Gemological Institute of America* spinel would a good candidate for the title of 'History’s Most Underappreciated Gem', because since ancient times it's been almost universally mistaken for sapphire. This has occurred because spinel is a vitreous magnesium aluminium oxide mineral (MgAl2O4 in the cubic crystal system) which is an almost identical chemical composition to sapphire. In other words, spinel and sapphire are 'sister stones'. The name 'spinel' too is revealing. It comes from the Greek word for "spark", in reference to its scintillating sapphire-like luster.

The spinels in these earrings were mined in the Songea region of Tanzania. They're completely natural earth-mined gems - that's to say, no heat or chemical processes were applied to them to enhance their natural hue or clarity. They display 'eye-clean' transparency and an intriguing colour - a very soft smoky lilac-pink hue, along with a sapphire-like luster that entertains under lights with scintillating shower of silver and powder pink sparks (see attached video). They're well cut gems too. The facets show neat proportions and symmetry and the gem's surfaces are smooth and unblemished.

Alone, each gem weighs a fraction under half a carat and measures 4.5mm in diameter. Along with their sturdy, cast sterling silver settings each earring measures 4.5mm (wide) x 17mm (long) and weighs a 0.37 grams. The settings used are crisp, premium quality 'basket' style settings manufactured by Stuller Inc. of Louisiana, America's finest jewellery components manufacturer.

As with all Salon Petite stud earrings, the prong tips have been micro polished to limit the chances of the metalwork catching in hair or on clothing, and both sterling silver butterfly clutches and clear silicone stoppers will be included for your comfort and convenience in fitting.

Presentation for the earrings includes a hinge-lid gift box lined with Japanese Unryu papers. Unryu is a handmade designer paper that contains strands of plant fiber for colour and contrast - very pretty. Dressing up my jewellery for display and gift-giving is one of my favourite parts of the Etsy process.
