A gorgeous gift for cyclists: an oblong woven bike basket in pink and turquoise pattering, handwoven in rural Ghana. This woven bike basket is the ultimate bike accessory: sturdy enough to carry all your essentials for a daily commute or a ride out into the countryside with a picnic and a good book.

Each woven bike basket takes up to three days to weave by hand and is made from wild veta vera – a Ghanaian crop also known as ‘Elephant Grass’ because of its sturdiness. This grass is harvested, split, rolled and dyed – all by hand - before a skilled weaver from our partner weaving group in Northern Ghana gets to work. Weaving is traditionally a female pursuit in Africa, but the weavers in this group are both male and female.

Basket weaving - a skill passed down the generations – has become a source of supplementary income for these communities in the dry seasons, helping families to meet their basic living costs where farming can fail. To own or gift one of these woven bike baskets is to become a part of our mission, helping men and women work their way into a more sustainable way of life.
