Song Dynasty Jian Zhan Tea Bowl — A Timeless Treasure of Ceramic Art
History: Born in 12th-century China’s Fujian province, Jian Zhan (建盏) was the ultimate tea bowl for Song Dynasty emperors and Zen monks. Prized for its meditative beauty, it later inspired Japan’s sacred Tenmoku tea ceremony wares.
Uniqueness:
✨ Natural Magic: Each bowl’s starry oil spots or golden hare’s fur glaze patterns emerge from 1300°C kiln alchemy—no two are alike.
✨ Handcrafted Legacy: Made with Jianyang’s iron-rich “purple-gold clay,” using 1,000-year-old techniques (China’s National Intangible Heritage).
Why Collectors Love It:
🌍 Global Icon: A bridge between Chinese Zen philosophy and Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetics.
🏆 Museum-Worthy: Rare Yohen Jian Zhan fragments have sold for $16.9M+ at auction.
Perfect For: Tea ritualists, ceramic art lovers, and those who cherish one-of-a-kind history.
Each piece was a collaboration between human skill and kiln serendipity; no two bowls were identical, celebrating the Taoist ideal of imperfect perfection.

Reviews for this item
I cannot deny cup is well made and feels lovely in the hand but I am sad the glaze is not as bright or as colorful as shown in the pictures. I know with firing some variations can occur but it was missing some of the color tones I was looking for. Shipped quickly and well packed.
