Discover the captivating beauty of British fluorite with these exceptional "you pick" specimens from the Northern Lights Pocket, found deep within the River Catcher Vein of the Diana Maria Mine, Weardale, County Durham, England. Each piece exhibits daylight fluorescence from deep emerald green to bluish purple. To see the pieces in their pure emerald green form, you have to view them either in a room with no windows or after sunset. They are SO incredibly sensitive to UV light that any daylight coming in from a window will cause a slight color change! This occurs due to their inclusion of yttrium, a rare earth element.

These specimens were mined by UK Mining Ventures, who uncovered the Northern Lights Pocket in recent years during their ongoing exploration of Diana Maria's lesser-exposed veins. The fluorite here is distinguished by its high clarity, vibrant zoning, and the dramatic fluorescence and color shift that collectors worldwide now associate with this specific pocket. Each piece varies in shape and structure — from sharp-edged cubes to intricate intergrown clusters — but all show the trademark color interplay that earned this pocket its celestial name. Other pieces hail from the Greedy Hog pocket, which produced fluorite with characteristics and color similar to the Northern Lights Pocket, but with the addition of Galena.

Photos show each piece in indoor lamp light and outdoor direct/indirect sunlight.

ABOUT DIANA MARIA MINE
The Diana Maria Mine, part of the historic Weardale mining district, is renowned for yielding some of the most vividly colored and fluorescent fluorite in the world. The River Catcher Vein is a lesser-known but geologically fascinating structure within the mine, branching off from the more famous Rogerley Vein.

The Northern Lights Pocket, discovered and mined by UK Mining Ventures, is one of the most visually impressive finds from the vein. The fluorite from this pocket is especially notable for its photochromism — the ability to change color under various types of light — and for the deep saturation and zoning of blue, green, and purple hues. Under daylight or LED light, the fluorite glows with cool teal or blue tones, while under incandescent light it shifts dramatically to purples and magentas. Additionally, the specimens fluoresce bright blue-violet under UV light, adding another layer of visual intrigue.

These features, combined with the clean crystal forms and scarcity of Northern Lights material on the market, make these specimens highly desirable for collectors seeking rare and dynamic examples of English fluorite.
