An iconic piece of 1970s Italian design (the project dates back to 1975), this Nautico model steel ashtray was designed by Studio OPI Milano for Cini & Nils, a design home decor company founded in 1969 in Milan (and still active today).

The name "Nautico" (Nautical) comes from its specific design for use on boats. The heavy weight of the object and the non-slip rubberized bottom prevented the ashtray from moving or sliding even in rough seas. Furthermore, its unmistakable wrap-around hemispherical dome shape protected the inside, preventing sea winds or drafts from blowing the ash away.

This ingenious concept and the purity of its sculptural forms made the Studio OPI for Cini & Nils ashtray a milestone in industrial design.
