Item highlights

  • Vintage: From the 1920s

Seller's description

This beautifully handcrafted, robust and sturdy oak antique French backgammon game from the 1920s is a one-of-a-kind treasure. This antique game piece would not only serve as a beautiful decorative accent for your coffee table, but it would also provide a one-of-a-kind 105 year old playing surface for any backgammon enthusiast.

It is a full-size board measuring 28" X 17" (72 cm X 44 cm) open. The baize has been replaced a longtime ago by hand laid wool felt with points in 'Monte Carlo' style and colors. The wool felt is undamaged, some glue is visible of 're-glueing' the tips of a few points it seems. The exterior of the game is in excellent condition just a few minor scuffs on the top but no major damage.

The exquisite closure mechanism boasts a rich, aged patina that tells the story of countless games played. The hinges are crafted from high-quality solid brass and remain in excellent condition.

The turned-wood playing pieces (or ‘stones’) are 2” (5cm) diameter French boxwood and have the beautiful grain and French boxwood is an extremely hard wood, native to France, which was also used to manufacture the early 'boules'. (the stones are neatly stored in 2 seperate linnen GammonAncien bag that fit inside the closed board)

The game comes with two matching hand made leather dice cups which have a terrific patina and we added 2 sets of dice to the game for these were missing.
