Art Form: Madhubani Painting of Bihar in East India and Fabric Upcycling Craft of Uttarakhand in North India

Vintage/History Value of Art Form: Belonging to the later Vedic period, Madhubani, also known as Mithila folk art, dates back over 14,000 years, making it one of the most ancient art forms in the world. Madhubani is mentioned in the Hindu epic Ramayana (c. 12,209 BCE, according to Nilesh Oak). At the time of his daughter Sita’s wedding to Lord Ram, King Janak of the Mithila region (now in North Bihar, East India) commissioned the Madhubani project. By buying these hand-painted Indian fabric bags from Store Utsav, you become part of the ancient roots of the world, not just Bharat (India).

Product Details: This upcycled cotton fabric Crossbody mini bag is handmade by a rural Bihari woman artist, a member of my shop. The light mint blue-colored shoulder bag pouch features a single main compartment secured with a black zipper. Lively forest scenes have been translated into the multicolored folk painting Madhubani or Mithila of Bihar in eastern India. Both the front and the back have the Indian legacy of folk painting. Indigo blue piping outlines the side of this handbag, terminating in a sling. This lovely, washable piece is a must-have if you are fond of traditional, legacy art and like to carry ethnic accessories or gift them on, say, a birthday.

Art Value: Madhubani painting, a traditional art form that hails from the Mithila region of Bihar, India. Dating back over 2,500 years, this intricate style is believed to have originated during the time of the Ramayana, when King Janaka commissioned artists to depict his daughter Sita's wedding to Lord Rama. Originally, Madhubani paintings adorned the walls and floors of mud huts, created using natural dyes and pigments derived from plants, flowers, and minerals. Artists utilized tools, like twigs, fingers, and matchsticks, to craft detailed geometric patterns and motifs. Over the centuries, Madhubani art has evolved from traditional mud walls to mediums such as handmade paper, cloth, and canvas. While keeping the traditional themes of mythology and nature, Store Utsav has expanded the repertoire to include contemporary utility like bags. We also try to continue the ancient Indian traditions of environmental responsibility, while keeping our products durable. These slow fashion bags are sustainable, as they are made of upcycled fabrics. The ancient art form of Madhubani is depicted with traditional motifs, such as a nature theme, in this zero-waste fashion boho sling bag or an eco-friendly artisanal purse.
