The name Herkimer Diamond refers to the place where the mineral was first discovered: in the valley of the Mohawk River in Herkimer County, USA.

Although the name Herkimer diamond might suggest otherwise, the stones from Herkimer are not diamonds, but quartz, specifically rock crystal.

What makes Herkimer diamonds special is the shape of the crystals, which at both ends exhibit the pointed crystal tips typical of quartz, resembling two pyramids stacked on top of each other. In mineralogy, such crystals are called double-terminated.

Clear quartz, pure silicon dioxide, is also called rock crystal or ice crystal, from the Greek word “krystallos,” meaning “ice,” because the crystal was thought to be frozen water, so hard that it could never thaw.

The term quartz was first attested in the first half of the 14th century in East Central German as a technical term for Bohemian mining.

Clear rock crystal also forms in the veins of our Alps from hot, almost pure silica. It takes approximately 40,000 years to form, during which time the silica solution cools very slowly, and growth ceases. Rock crystal belongs to the oxide mineral class.

The ancient Romans believed that their gods resided in rock crystal. It was supposed to grant them wisdom and courage. At the same time, rock crystal brought them faithfulness in love.

The Indians placed a rock crystal in the cradles of their babies to protect them from all evil.

Buddhists hoped that rock crystal would bring them complete enlightenment through meditation.
