F-111 Aardvark Overview

The General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark was a supersonic, medium-range interdictor and tactical attack aircraft that served with the United States Air Force from the late 1960s through the 1990s. Known for its innovative design, the F-111 was one of the first production aircraft to feature variable-geometry wings, allowing it to switch between high-speed and low-speed flight configurations efficiently. This flexibility enabled it to perform low-level, high-speed penetration missions deep into enemy territory, a capability that made it a valuable strategic asset during the Cold War.

Developed in response to the need for a versatile, multi-role fighter, the F-111 incorporated a crew of two seated side-by-side in an escape capsule rather than traditional ejection seats — a groundbreaking safety feature at the time. It was powered by two Pratt & Whitney TF30 afterburning turbofan engines, which allowed it to reach speeds over Mach 2.5 at altitude.

The F-111’s combat debut came during the Vietnam War, where it performed both bombing and reconnaissance missions.
