Highlights

This is an exact, full-size, hand-shaped replica of the iconic Scorzelli cross, the bent-arm papal crucifix originally created in 1963 by renowned Italian sculptor Lello Scorzelli.

It has a metal core for rigidity inside hard acrylic for wear resistance and is waterproof. This took me about a month to sculpt. The cross topper measures just over 16 inches in length and weighs approximately 150 grams.

The cross comes with the altar stand shown in the video. It is a 4" black circular base with a heavy metal core. The cross stands a few inches above a desk or altar.

When carried for liturgical purposes, this cross will fit securely atop a 1-inch diameter aluminum pole that you can buy from Walmart for under $10. It is available both in-store and online, and is height adjustable between 48" and 84". This allows you to match the exact height of the staff as carried by all the previous Popes. The cross fits securely enough that it can be moved between the staff and altar stand. I will send you the link to the exact $10 staff shown in the photos.

The original Scorzelli ferula was commissioned by Pope Paul VI during the transformative years of the Second Vatican Council. Lello Scorzelli, born in Naples in 1921, was already an established liturgical artist when he was invited to work within Vatican walls. Paul VI sought a modern interpretation of the traditional papal staff, and Scorzelli delivered this striking departure from past designs: a crucifix with a downward-curving crossbeam, paired with a somber, elongated Christ that evoked profound sorrow and humility. This crucifix was first used publicly on December 8, 1965, at the closing Mass of Vatican II, and quickly became emblematic of the modern papacy.

What set Scorzelli’s design apart is the raw spiritual expression. Influenced by the controversial work of Belgian artist Albert Servaes, whose emotional Stations of the Cross were once censured for their graphic intensity, Scorzelli incorporated a sense of human vulnerability into the figure of Christ.

Following Paul VI, the ferula was carried by Pope John Paul I and became iconic under Pope John Paul II, who was so closely associated with it that Scorzelli later sculpted a lighter version for him in the 1990s due to the Pope’s declining strength. Pope Benedict XVI initially used this same ferula before transitioning to older models, and Pope Francis chose to return to the Scorzelli design, reestablishing its symbolic continuity in the modern Church. Pope Leo XIV carried the ferula during his first few days as Pope in 2025.

This is absolutely stunning. Our Church St. John Paul II, was using a processional cross that was donated and was very heavy. This is so lite, and so beautiful. Can be used for either an altar cross or processional cross. I would recommend securing it to the staff or the supplied base for the altar. It is a perfect press fit, but I could see it becoming easily dislodged. I could not be happier. This is a present for the church. Otto Frost is very easy to work with and a excellent seller. The staff in the picture is actually a curtain rod brushed nickel. Available at Walmart for $10. It fits perfectly and telescopes. Mainstays Nickel Adjustable Tension Window Curtain Rod, 1" Diameter, Adjustable 48" - 84".
