The Queen’s Favorite: A Royal Diamond Set with South African Roots

Often referred to by Queen Elizabeth as her “best diamonds,” this exquisite necklace and bracelet set carries both historical significance and regal elegance.

In 1947, to mark her 21st birthday during a royal visit to South Africa, Princess Elizabeth received an extraordinary gift from the South African people: a bespoke diamond necklace totaling 71.31 carats. Carefully designed to symbolize each year of her life, the necklace featured 21 graduated brilliant-cut diamonds, each set in handcrafted platinum claw settings. Connecting these stunning gems were delicate baguette-cut and small brilliant-cut diamonds, bringing the total to 87 stones. The centerpiece? A dazzling 10-carat diamond.

The diamonds were first presented in unset form at a birthday ball held in Cape Town on April 21, 1947, by Field Marshal Jan Smuts. Just days earlier, the Princess had visited the Big Hole Mine in Kimberley, where Sir Ernest Oppenheimer of De Beers presented her with a rare 6-carat blue-white diamond, gifted by his granddaughter. This special stone later became a detachable clasp on the necklace.

The original necklace was showcased at St. James’s Palace as part of the Princess’s wedding gift exhibition in 1947 and worn on her official visit to Paris in 1948. In 1952, the piece was them redesigned. The necklace was shortened to 15 main stones, with the remaining diamonds and clasp repurposed into an elegant matching bracelet.

Today, this historic set stands as a symbol of enduring craftsmanship, royal heritage, and the timeless beauty of South African diamonds—each stone telling a story of celebration, tradition, and transformation.
