Seller's description

Antique 19th-century bullion coat of arms badge featuring a marquess coronet and Pignatelli-style firesteel arms.

OVERVIEW
Antique heraldic bullion badge with hand-stitched metallic thread on a padded silk ground, depicting a noble coat of arms: an argent shield with a dark diagonal bend between two stylised firesteel-shaped devices, surmounted by a marquess’s coronet.

These arms closely resemble those used by the Pignatelli family, an important Aragonese/Neapolitan noble house whose heraldry features a bend between two firesteels beneath a marquess coronet. While an exact attribution cannot be confirmed without provenance, the composition and rank coronet are strongly consistent with 19th-century Spanish or Italian noble livery or household insignia and are very much in the Pignatelli tradition.

Worked in classic ceremonial regalia style, the badge shows ornate bullion embroidery, scrolling wreath motifs, and a fabric backing. It is now fitted with an old safety pin for wear, likely a later adaptation from its original sewn-on use (uniform, livery coat, saddlecloth, or cushion).

Perfect for collectors of heraldic art, European nobility, regalia, and antique military or chivalric insignia, or for display in a shadowbox, study, or costume-history collection.

Details:
• Estimated date: Late 19th century, possibly c. 1880–1910
• Probable origin: Spanish or Italian noble household; heraldry in the style of the Pignatelli family
• Materials: Metallic bullion thread, silk or satin ground, cloth and paper backing, old safety pin
• Dimensions: Approx. 3.25” high (see photos with ruler for scale)

Condition:
• Heavy age patina to bullion threads with darkening and some verdigris
• Fraying and losses to embroidery at edges and in lower border
• Wear and discoloration to silk ground; scattered small holes and thread pulls
• Backing shows age, paper remnants, and later safety-pin attachment
• Structurally stable but fragile in places – handle with care

Please view all photos closely and feel free to ask questions. Sold as-is as an antique textile with expected wear from age and use.
