Gorgeous and elegant, vintage Black Hills Gold pendant! Featuring a pear shaped black Onyx cabochon, set in 10K solid yellow gold (the leaves are 12K solid rose and green gold). Also featuring a lovely milgrain design.

Onyx is a captivating black gemstone that is composed of microscopic quartz crystals and belongs to the chalcedony mineral group. The chemical composition of onyx is silicon dioxide (SiO₂), with varying amounts of iron oxide and other minerals that give it its unique color variations. Typically, onyx is black, but it can also be found in brown, red, and white.

Onyx is a relatively hard mineral, with a Mohs hardness rating of 6.5 to 7. This means that it is durable enough to be used in jewelry and other decorative objects, but it is not as hard as some other gemstones like diamonds or sapphires. Despite this, onyx has been used for centuries to create both decorative and functional objects.

Onyx is found in many locations around the world, including Brazil, India, and the United States. Some of the most prized onyx comes from Pakistan, where it is known for its deep black color and fine texture. In ancient times, onyx was often used for carvings and cameos, and was also used to create bowls and other decorative objects. Onyx has been a popular gemstone choice for centuries, and particularly during the Art Deco period of the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. During this time, onyx was often used in Art Deco jewelry to create bold and geometric designs that were both elegant and modern.

All pieces are cleaned and lightly polished, unless otherwise specified. All pieces are also acid tested by me to guarantee the authenticity of the precious metals listed. All diamonds 0.01 carats or larger are also tested. I use both a diamond tester and a presidium gem tester to help me determine what a gemstone is (though it cannot tell the difference between a natural and lab made gem). I will only label a gem as natural if I’m sure that it is, otherwise I’ll state “possibly lab created”. I’m not a gemologist and so I cannot 100% guarantee the authenticity of a gemstone, but I do try my hardest to use my experience and equipment at hand to be as accurate as possible.

Sizing:

I’m not a jeweler and have no soldering equipment, and thus I cannot resize rings myself. Any ring you wish to resize must be done after delivery by an independent jeweler. If you have questions as to whether I think a certain ring is capable of resizing (due to age or the position of the stones/band) please don’t be shy to ask!
