Tiny sandals wait at the threshold, a kettle hangs above the hearth, and cupboards hold the familiar belongings of everyday life in this beautifully detailed Japanese farmhouse wood relief. Hand-carved and painted by Tokusai Tanaka of Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, this large vintage wall artwork opens a welcoming window into a traditional kominka home. Its layered rooms and miniature furnishings invite you to look closer and discover something new each time. Hung above a low cabinet or displayed securely on a sideboard beside a favourite pottery vessel, it brings warmth, character and the pleasures of rural Japanese life into your interior.

A FARMHOUSE WORLD IN MINIATURE
Set within a boldly carved wooden frame, the scene unfolds like an open section of a country house. Raised living spaces, sliding doors and a lower kitchen area create a convincing sense of depth, while painted surfaces pick out the textures of timber, tatami, household utensils and textiles.

The appeal lies in the attention given to ordinary things. Storage cupboards, tea utensils, a hanging lamp and carefully placed vessels make the rooms feel inhabited, even without a figure in sight. Two zabuton cushions beside the hearth leave room for the imagination: a shared meal, a pause for tea, or conversation at the end of a working day.

From across the room, the substantial frame and recessed interior give the work a sculptural presence. Up close, it becomes a miniature world of domestic details.

TOKUSAI TANAKA AND MATSUMOTO CRAFTSMANSHIP
Tokusai Tanaka worked in Matsumoto City in Nagano Prefecture, a region with a rich tradition of folk crafts and wooden architecture. His hand-carving and painted finish bring both structure and personality to this farmhouse interior.

His work is also connected with the city’s festival traditions. A preservation account published by Matsumoto’s Fukashi Shrine identifies Tanaka as the maker of a Susanoo deity figure installed on the Miyamuramachi festival float in 1993. This connection places his craftsmanship within the local world of carved figures, community celebrations and traditional making.

THE HEART OF THE HOME - THE IRORI
At the centre of the scene is the irori, the sunken hearth around which cooking, warmth and family life came together. A miniature kettle representing the familiar cast-iron household kettle hangs above it from a jizaikagi, an adjustable hearth hook.

In a working farmhouse, this fitting allowed the kettle or cooking pot to be raised or lowered to control its distance from the fire. The fish-shaped wooden crosspiece carried another meaning: it expressed a wish for safety around the hearth, bringing a protective association to an everyday household tool.

The hearth helped care for the house itself, too. In traditional thatched homes, its rising warmth and smoke kept the roof space dry and helped protect the thatch from insects and decay. The fire that warmed the family also played a practical role in preserving the building around them.

ROOMS, CUPBOARDS AND EVERYDAY TOOLS
Behind the hearth, the raised tatami-floored living area, or hiroma, is bordered by sliding fusuma doors and an oshiire storage cupboard. Traditionally, futon bedding could be put away in such cupboards during the day, allowing a room to change from a sleeping space to a place for meals, visitors or household activities.

The lower doma kitchen area represents the practical earthen-floored part of the farmhouse. Here, the kamado cooking stove, mizukame water jar, tansu storage chests and small utensils recreate the equipment of daily domestic work.

Geta sandals mark the transition between the lower working floor and the raised living rooms. A hanging oil lamp adds another familiar household detail, while a noren curtain gives a glimpse of the passage beyond, toward the engawa veranda. Together, these furnishings make the scene rewarding for anyone who enjoys Japanese architecture and the ingenuity of traditional homes.

SMALL EXPRESSIONS OF FAITH AND PERSEVERANCE
Above the tansu hangs a framed calligraphy panel bearing 道, michi, meaning “way” or “path.” Read within this domestic setting, it offers a thoughtful reminder of one’s path through life.

A small kamidana, or household Shinto shelf, brings daily devotion into the scene. Such shelves provide a place for shrine talismans and small offerings, keeping gratitude and prayers for the household close to everyday activities.

The vivid red Daruma adds a cheerful note of determination. Associated with perseverance and the pursuit of a goal, Daruma is a fitting companion to a home shaped by work, care and the routines of family life.

These details give the carving much of its charm: practical belongings and spiritual concerns share the same small rooms.

CONDITION
Very good vintage condition. A small wooden attachment point behind the hanging lamp appears to be missing; the lamp hangs naturally in front, concealing the area when displayed.
