Carrageenan has long been regarded as the best medium for paper marbling. A natural product derived from a type of seaweed, this fine powder can be mixed with water to produce the thick fluid that is essential for paper marbling.

To produce the marbling fluid (called 'size'), mix between 14 and 20 grams (1.5 - 2 tbsp) of carrageenan powder per litre (approx. 1 quart) of warm water (distilled is best) using a blender or hand mixer. Let the mixture stand between 8 and 24 hours, stirring occasionally, until all the powder has dissolved and any bubbles have dissipated. The size performs best if kept at room temperature and should last for 2-3 days, after which the paints will break up on the surface (and it may begin to smell). The working time can be extended for a few extra days by refrigerating the size between marbling sessions, though it should be allowed to warm up to room temperature before marbling begins.
