This plant can be shipped dormant in the winter for potting indoors or in the spring for outdoor planting.
Blooming in early spring and providing lovely foliage the rest of the year, this flower is the uncommon Black Iris. This black beauty can change hues as it matures, starting out as black as tar, gradually showing off a sheen of iridescent hues of the darkest purple that glistens in the sun, while still maintaining it's stunning depth and unique richness. Blooms magnificently in the worst clay soils with no fertilizer, amendment, or mulch. Hardy in zones 3-9, can be divided every couple of years, which makes it easy to have a whole mess of them in a short period of time. This plant is deer resistant, rabbit resistant, attracts tons of butterflies and those fat pollinating bumbles. Drought tolerant once established, but might need some water during the hottest months. As a low water gardener in zone 7b, I just mow the leaves of my full sun irises down in July or trim the tips if I want to keep the foliage. I leave the irises planted in shadier spots all year.
Note: You'll be getting rhizomes with fans trimmed, so please plant asap and water well. These are dried and crunchy, but will come alive once you plant them.
